Scientific Drilling in the Nordic Countries
Scientific Drilling in the Nordic Countries
A NORDFORSK RESEARCHERS NETWORK
Announcement: Workshop on diamond-core drilling, March 2013
The researchers network
Cooperation and networking is necessary to consolidate the competence and experience that exists from accomplished and on-going scientific drilling projects (and also commercial drilling operations) in the diverse geological settings of the Nordic countries: Finland and Sweden's Proterozoic and older basement of the Fennoscandian Shield, the deeply eroded Palaeozoic Caledonian orogen of Norway and western Sweden, the Mesozoic and younger sedimentary rocks of Denmark and southern Sweden and Iceland's position on top of the active Mid-Atlantic ridge. This network of Nordic researchers aims to widen the perspective of all involved scientists by introducing them to new geoscientific problems, different geological settings and drilling technological challenges. It will actively distribute precious knowledge and ideas to new initiatives and provide novices in the field of scientific drilling with the essential knowledge and experience.
The combined competence from various fields of drilling that exists in the Nordic countries, and the experience from the diverse drilling enterprises will elevate the quality of research training, and with it the quality of the existing and new scientific projects. The business networks of the involved researchers will also facilitate the formation of high-quality international working groups. Drilling specialists that work with the scientific team are needed to adapt advanced drilling technology and methodologies for scientific drilling needs. Experience exchange is here also utterly important.
The researchers network "Scientific Drilling in the Nordic Countries" aims to consolidate the competence and experience from scientific drilling projects in the diverse geological settings of the Nordic countries, and to propagate it in the scientific community.
